Why Speaking Gigs Are Good for Networking
Are you using speaking opportunities to your advantage?
Nkrumah Pierre, director of business development and Friends of the Firm program at EisnerAmper, explains how leaders can use speaking opportunities to their networking advantage.
“A great networking tip is to speak on panels and also speak at conferences,” says Nkrumah. “I think that's a great way to market yourself, and it also allows the audience members to interact with you, whether it's via question and answers, and also listening to your pearls of wisdom.”

So if you do speak in these panels or you speak at these conferences, leave a good 15 to 20 minutes to network with the individuals in the audience. So typically, when I speak, have the Q&A, and then folks will come up to speak with me and network, ask for my business card and things of that nature.
Now what I will say is when you're speaking a lot and going to a lot of these events, it's tough to remember every single person, but that's when the follow-up comes into play where they can actually, hopefully, reference what you spoke about during that conversation in their email follow-up. Connect with the person on social media, so like LinkedIn, for sure. Twitter's another avenue.
It's funny. I had a client that I emailed a few times about a deal that we were supposed to do together, and I hadn't heard from him. Then I realized that he was following me on Twitter and liking a ton of my content. So, "OK, maybe he's not a big email person, but he likes Twitter." I said thank you for some of the tweets, and then I said, "Hey, looking forward to catching up next week. Maybe we can discuss some of the items during our meeting from a few weeks ago." He actually responded back instantly on Twitter, because he loves Twitter, and said, "Please, call me Tuesday morning."
Again, being innovative, thinking outside the box, but also remembering that we're all human. Some of us like Facebook, but we don't like Twitter. Some of us love email, but don't like the phone. So again, understanding your audience or knowing your audience is another piece, and that helps with the networking piece and then the follow-up.
