In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2019, Glennon Doyle—best-selling author, activist, speaker and founder of Together Rising—shares her advice on what to do when you’re going through a hard time.

“The only answer to what should you do when you're struggling is get really still and listen for the next right thing,” says Glennon. “There's this thing that happens when I get still enough and it's just like a little nudge… it's like a yellow-brick road where you just, inside will tell you what's the next right thing.”

Watch the video to learn what this little voice inside might sound like.

OK, so the only answer to what should you do when you're struggling is get really still and listen for the next right thing. I know this, that there is this thing inside of me, that when I, I don't know what it is. Some people call it God, some people call it intuition, I don't care what it's called, I don't know why we argue about that. I know what's important is that we do call it, right? So there's this thing that happens when I get still enough and it's just like a little nudge or it's just a, it's like a yellow-brick road where you just, inside you will tell you what's the next right thing and once you connect to that, it'll tell you what's the next right thing and this thing inside will never give you the five-year plan, right? It will never tell you how it ends. It will never give you big instructions. It will just tell you the little…

So if you hear, if you don't know what to do and a voice says, “Become a famous writer,” that's not it, right? The little voice will say something like, clean up your bedroom, wash the dishes, then take a shower. It's like these little things, one after another and it's like, you know what Anne Lamott, I think she calls it, it's like you can, it's like driving a car at night, with headlights on. You can only see 20 feet in front of you but you can make it the whole way home like that. So next right thing, one thing at a time and that will take you all the way home.
