Sisters Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager explain why soft skills are as important as hard skills in leadership.

“We saw through our grandfather real strength and softness and empathy and compassion,” shares Barbara. “Those were often thought of as soft skills, but I'd say they're hard skills in leadership in terms of connecting with others and serving others and leading teams well, letting them know that you love your colleagues so that they want to come to work every day and feel like you see them.”

Watch the video to learn more from the Bush sisters about the value of soft skills.

I've learned a lot about strength and softness and softness and leadership. Growing up I thought leadership was one thing just based on what you see on TV or you learn in history books, like in the army, it's go north and everybody follows and in fact, that can be leadership, but there's also, we saw through our grandfather real strength and softness and empathy and compassion and those were often thought of as soft skills, but I'd say they're hard skills in leadership in terms of connecting with others and serving others and leading teams well, letting them know that you love your colleagues so that they want to come to work every day and feel like you see them. That's the best form of leadership I've been able to witness in my career.

If you feel empowered in your workplace than you're going to do a better job than if you're getting there and thinking you're doing something wrong all the time. I feel lucky to work at a place where I feel valued. A lot of my colleagues starting from 22-year-old PAs feel valued and I think that that's where our country needs to go starting with the leadership but really making sure that everybody that works there feels loved and valued so that you can create this great atmosphere to work in.
