Ivo Philbert, vice president, chief program officer at The Jackie Robinson Foundation, shares why taking risks on employees is valuable to building the next generation of leaders.

“Recognizing that my manager took a risk on me, I knew I had to be successful,” says Ivo, thinking back to a time a leader put faith in him. “I knew I had to perform. That meant I had to do everything in my power to learn as quickly as possible, to come up to speed and to be creative and innovative.”

Sometimes you have to take a risk on employees. So I remember very early on in my career I did not have a training background and I had an interest in doing training. So I went to my manager and we had an honest conversation and my manager had to make a decision, "Do I bring in someone who has a training background and training experience, or do I take a risk on this person who has the energy and the passion and wants to try it and give them the opportunity to develop?" And my manager took the chance and gave me the opportunity.

So recognizing that my manager took a risk on me, I knew I had to be successful. I knew I had to perform. That meant I had to everything in my power to learn as quickly as possible, to come up to speed and to be creative and innovative in terms of what we delivered in my new department.

So it was great, loved it. But imagine what that did for me and my confidence. I knew someone took a risk on me. I knew someone believed in my abilities. What that made me do is want to do even more. So I was fully engaged in that organization.
