The SBH Litmus Test for Meetings
Should you really be bored in meetings?
Juliet Funt, CEO of WhiteSpace at Work, shares a tool leaders can use when they find themselves bored in meetings: the SBH, “shouldn’t be here,” test.
“This is when you're sitting in a meeting and all of a sudden you find yourself bored or distracted or digitally multitasking,” shares Juliet. “Often it's a clue that either you're sitting in the wrong meeting at the wrong time or you're the wrong person or your presence is redundant… SBH, shouldn’t be here.”

So we tell them to say inside their head, SBH, shouldn't be here, shouldn't be here, shouldn't be here, shouldn't be here. And it's an internal process. But what happens is if you're sitting in a meeting and you hear yourself saying that over and over and over, eventually that healthy prompt will push you to action. And you will say, "I think I need to opt-out of this meeting." Or you can say, "The first half of this meeting was great, but I'd like permission to not sit in on the second half where you read out two-dimensional report outs that I could get easily in an email or on a pull system." And it emboldens people to take a look at their boredom as a clue, and then to use this little mental technique to kind of fortify, to create more healthy discomfort around the boredom.
