Ginger Hardage, former senior vice president of culture and communications at Southwest Airlines, explains what leaders should do to inspire a ‘workplace zombie,’ someone who is disengaged from his or her work.

In the video, Ginger defines a workplace zombie as, “someone who the lights just aren't on. They're just there and they're not really engaged in the work.”

How do you reengage disengaged employees? Watch the video to learn more.

What I mean by workplace zombies, I think we may can relate to it. We may have encountered somebody in a retail situation where they really don't want to help us in that retail situation as a customer, or somebody in the office where we work, and that's someone who the lights just aren't on. They're just there and they're not really engaged in the work.

As a leader, that's our responsibility, is to hire the right kind of people who are going to fit our organization and train them properly. And if someone's not fitting in and delivering the great customer service, they're just kind of there, if we can't help them get to another level, the best thing we can do is help them leave the organization and find something that's a better fit. Because all of us, with our co-workers, we deserve having everybody as a healthy team working together, and if that's not the case, it's not good for anybody on the team, and we're not going to be able to serve our customers if we don't have everyone on our team engaged.
