We oftentimes hear the term managing up. Well, that is a reality because if the individual and their manager are not communicating effectively, then there isn't any sharing of truth with each other. The relationship now is based on assumptions, and probably a lot of tension that follows with that.

And so with a respectful approach, have a conversation with the manager. And with every difficult conversation, always begin with a common purpose. "Hey look, manager, it is important for me to shine in my work, for me to be able to deliver against the goals and objectives that we have set together. I feel some barriers to my performance, and I'd like to sit down and have a conversation with you about that because I feel that you can help me with that."

That is a great way to create a sense of safety to have a conversation with the manager. An open and honest conversation. Ask for permission. "May I be open and honest?" And when you share your point of view, share it respectfully. And don't jump to conclusions so quickly.
