Make Discipline Your Bedrock
Do you have a daily discipline routine?
Alex Hailstock—entrepreneur, fitness authority and personal development mentor—defines discipline and explains why it’s critical to being a successful leader.
“Discipline for me is doing what you have to do, whether you want to or not, when you have to do it,” explains Alex. “For me discipline's a bedrock. It's a foundation for success in any aspect or any venture, so it's something I work on every single day.”
How are you disciplining yourself on a daily basis? Watch the video to hear Alex’s daily discipline routine and establish one for yourself.
It's all started with physical fitness. Physical fitness, it's challenging, it doesn't come easy, and it's a duration race. Fitness is a marathon. And so you're not going to get in shape the first time you go to the gym. You're not going to get in shape the third time you go the gym. It takes a lot of time.
And so I really strengthen my discipline waking up early, every morning at 5:00 a.m. no matter what happens, no matter when I go to bed, I'm in the gym. My nutrition as well, I monitor what I eat very closely, and so that also takes discipline, not taking the most convenient route. And so that strengthens my willpower.
And also when it comes to the professional world, you know, I'm in sales a lot of people are afraid to make sales calls. They're afraid of the rejection. It takes discipline to call that one expired client that you had three months ago that you know is always in a bad mood, that takes a lot of discipline, and so for me it's in every aspect of your life.
The discipline journey for me all started, really just growing up with my parents. I grew up in a pretty strict kind of militant household and so there were no kind of easy routes, there was no allowance, there was no… My dad said, "You're allowed to walk on my stairs." So that was my allowance.
So it really comes from my upbringing, but then my sophomore year of college I stopped playing sports. And that was really the reason I was in school. And so I really kind of lost my purpose, I was kind of drifting and I stumbled upon personal development of growth and I just needed something to pour all my energy into. And so that's where I found the physical fitness and the discipline, the constant continuing education and it really gave me a lot of structure, a lot of purpose.
I had a great friend in school. His name was J.Y. and he just grabbed me by the head and said, "Hey, let's go to the gym." And I was in pretty decent shape, coming from sports and athletics, but this guy was in really good shape. This guy was just crushing me. And we go to the gym and I'd leave and I'm just beat up and I'm sore and I'd come back the next day. That discipline was already ingrained in me, I just needed an outlet for it. I had to have another passion, another drive to express that discipline.
