Legacy Leadership & Lessons That Stick

If not now, when?

“If not now, when? If not me, who?” This is just one of the leadership mantras that you will often hear from Kat Cole, COO and President, North America at FOCUS Brands. In this video, Kat shares her most powerful lessons — gleaned from her own journey and unexpected places – as she discusses the importance of leaving behind a legacy of leadership.

Kat hopes that the lessons she’s learned and shared will stick with her colleagues, team members and peers, including the one she feels is most powerful: “You are capable of more than you know,” says Kat. “That’s not a daunting thought, it’s an inspiring thought.”

Another lesson that Kat shares is unique in a world that can often be driven by self-satisfaction: she encourages people to find “the balance of courage and confidence with humility and curiosity.”

What lessons do you hope will leave an impact on your team and colleagues? What qualities do you exhibit by the way you live and what you teach your followers?

I hope a few things stick that I often say or share that I’ve learned, probably the most powerful of which is you’re capable of more than you know. As humans, we are far more capable than anything we can even conjure in our minds. We are capable of great physical feats, great emotional strength, incredible intellectual discovery. And I think if individuals hear that, and it sticks, and they really believe it, and they read it every day or they see it every day, they simply come closer to realizing their full potential. I know I am capable of far more than I will ever know, which means accomplishment and growth and learning is limitless. And that’s not a daunting thought, it’s an inspiring thought. And so people being capable of more than they know is something that I hope that sticks. I hope that the thinking around the balance of courage and confidence with humility and curiosity, I really hope that sticks. That is a mantra or a description of characteristics that is about just being an awesome human. It is about leadership of self, leadership of family, being the best version of you that you can be, because everything that you have is such a gift, and why would you not optimize it? So I hope that that sticks. And I hope that the line that some may have heard, that I hear from my mom a lot sticks, which is, “If not me, who? If not now, when?” That, “If not me, who? If not now, when?” is about personal accountability and about believing it’s never too late to act, but if you don’t now, what are you trading off? And if not you, who? And why can’t it be you? So I hope those are some things that stick with people.
