Backstage Interview: Leadership vs. Management
Are you leading, managing or a little of both?
An exclusive backstage interview with Seth Godin, from Leadercast Live 2015!
Marketing guru Seth Godin reminds us that there is a huge between management and true leadership. He explains that management is about tasks, roles, efficiencies, systems, processes -- all extremely important to successful organizations.
Leadership, on the other hand, is about values and behaviors, and it can and should be a part of every person's role -- from managers to support staff to volunteers to parents.
When you consider your various roles and responsibilities, are you managing, leading or a little of both?
Leaders, on the other hand, don't tell people what to do. Leaders say, "Over there, we need to go over there. I'm not sure how to get there. Let's go." And that statement, "I'm not sure how to get there," is something that people are afraid to even say. But if you can't say that, then you can't be a leader, because what it means to be a leader is, you're not sure, you just have a compass, not a map.
Seth Godin is the author of 17 books that have been best-sellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages. You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dipand Purple Cow.
