A few of the characteristics she looks for are:

  • How do people respond in situations that are not always successful?

  • How do they internalize the lessons that they are learning?

  • How do they take the experiences that are presented to them and utilize them to grow?

Watch the video to hear more from Ellen on the characteristics to look out for during the interview process.

The characteristics that I look for in young people when I build a team are: How do people respond in situations that are not always successful? How do they internalize the lessons that they are learning? How do they take the experiences that are presented to them and utilize them to grow?

I think one of the most important things that you can do as a young individual in the workplace is not only to have self confidence, but to balance that with a sense of humor. To be someone that can bring out the best in others, to be someone that looks for opportunities to share praise, and encouragement is, for me, the kind of team that I want to build. I look beyond just raw test scores, or you know what was your GPA coming out of school, how many honors did you have.

What I want to know is how curious are you? What really makes you tick? What is the big question that you're dying to ask the next client who comes in the room? How do you find, and define your why? Once someone can talk with me about that, once I can uncover that they are an open minded individual with self awareness about where they are in their own learning process, it makes it possible not only to help them grow, but for them to be able to use those same qualities in helping clients. So the ability to uncover what you're excited about, what you're curious about, and where you want to help others grow is a key for me in looking at what characteristics I'm going to pull around me in my team members.
