In this backstage interview from Leadercast Live 2019, Gayle King—co-host of CBS This Morning and editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine—explains how to get the most out of interviews.

“I believe any question can be asked, it's just that you have to pick the right time, the right setting and the right tone,” shares Gayle. “Even if it's awkward and uncomfortable, you still have the right to ask the question, and by the same token, the person who I'm asking the question has the right to say, ‘You know what? I don't feel like talking about that right now.’”

I believe any question can be asked, it's just that you have to pick the right time, the right setting and the right tone. I never want anybody who I'm about to do an interview with feel uncomfortable. I'm not a gotcha kind of person. I'm never trying to set you up so I can knock you down. I think even if it's awkward and uncomfortable, you still have the right to ask the question, and by the same token, the person who I'm asking the question has the right to say, "You know what? I don't feel like talking about that right now." That is really a perfectly acceptable thing.

When people can feel your true intention, and they know that you're not trying to make them look bad, I'm not trying to create and awkward situation even when it is an awkward moment. I don't find it so hard making people feel comfortable. With everybody who comes on CBS This Morning, I always go into the green room to talk to them ahead of time. I do that because it's live television and you have this much time, and I just want to make sure that when they're out there that we hit the things they want to hit and that it's a good experience for them. I want to make the most use of their time for me and for them.
