Kevin Sasson is the executive director of SonLight Power, a nonprofit that uses solar power to improve lives. He takes his teams around the world to teach locals and install solar panels and power-giving infrastructure.

In this video, Kevin explains why his teams are so effective, and it’s not because he has all of the skills. It’s because he has recognized the individual skills that each person has and how they fit into the puzzle of their team to make their work a success. Plus, he models and encourages a spirit of humility in his team, so that they too recognize what their team members bring to the table.

“I can’t pretend to be somebody I’m not, and if I did, most of the people on our trips would really see through that,” says Kevin. “Each one of us has the ability to bring out the best in ourselves and each other, just by understanding and being authentic to who you are.”

On our trips, I’m not the person bringing the solar expertise to our projects. I’ve picked up a drill twice on about 70 different trips. Once was to use the drill the wrong way and the other time was to give it to somebody else to use.

I can’t pretend to be somebody I’m not, and if I did, most of the people on our trips would really see through that. Where my real value lies - in the field - is in the relationship building. Ensuring that the team is getting along well, but also connecting with our local partners. Sometimes, engineers don’t always have the most social skills available, and there’s that conduit needed to bridge the people we’re impacting and the teams in the field.

So, in my opinion, the best thing I bring to our teams, to our organization, is a sense of humility. I can’t do it all myself. I rely on others to do a lot of the work, and the teamwork that comes from that makes it an even better story than someone trying to do it on his or her own.

I think that’s a good example for others who might feel maybe overwhelmed in their situation. Each one of us has the ability to bring out the best in ourselves and each other, just by understanding and being authentic to who you are.
