In this backstage interview from Leadercast Live 2018, leadership communicator and author Andy Stanley explains how honesty is at the core of self-leadership.

“One of the decisions that we have to make if we're going to lead ourselves well, we just have to decide, ‘I'm not going to lie to myself anymore,’” says Andy. “We are all experts on selling ourselves on terrible ideas… At some point, we have to fire that liar, that person who looks at us in the mirror and doesn't allow us to embrace the truth. We just have to decide, ‘You know what, I'm not working for you anymore. I'm going to hire the version of me that is willing to tell myself the truth, even when it makes me feel bad about myself.’”

TAKEAWAYS
- Listen to the difficult truths that come from others.
- Notice any lies you may be telling yourself.
- Hold on to anything you find that is true.

One of the decisions that we have to make if we're going to lead ourselves well, we just have to decide, "I'm not going to lie to myself anymore." Because we are all experts on selling ourselves on terrible ideas. Again, every bad decision I've made, I sold myself on it. I mean, there may have been other people selling, but at the end of the day, I made the decision. I signed on the dotted line to go there or not go there, call or not call, avoid, rush in too early, whatever it might be.

At some point, and it sounds strange, we have to fire that liar, that person that looks at us in the mirror and doesn't allow us to embrace the truth. We just have to decide, "You know what, I'm not working for you anymore. I'm going to hire the version of me that is willing to tell myself the truth, even when it makes me feel bad about myself."

And none of us want to feel bad about ourselves. That's why we avoid certain people, that's why, I, growing up, avoided certain environments. If I thought I couldn't succeed, I just didn't go there. Why? Well, I just didn't want to feel bad about myself but there's something worse than feeling bad about yourself and feeling bad about ourselves, and that is holding on to things that are bad. But oftentimes, we're not willing to let go, until we're first willing to acknowledge, "I'm embracing or I'm believing something that's just not true. I'm going to admit it, I'm gonna feel bad about myself, and then, I'm going to change it." That's the nature of self-leadership.
