In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2018, Molly Fletcher—speaker, author and founder of The Molly Fletcher Company—shares what leaders can learn from athletes about being fearless.

“Great athletes were nervous when they were pitching game seven of a World Series,” says Molly. “The best basketball players in the world are nervous when they've got to get up on the line with two minutes left to win a basketball game, but they step into that and they embrace it. To me, fearlessness is about leaning into those little moments.”

Watch the video to learn more about how to face fear as a leader.

A fearless leader is somebody that leans into tough moments. Everybody feels fear, we all feel it in different moments in our lives and we find ourselves in moments potentially all day every day.

When I was an agent, a sports agent, what I saw was great athletes lean into those moments. Great athletes were nervous when they were pitching game seven of a World Series. The best basketball players in the world are nervous when they've got to get up on the line with two minutes left to win a basketball game, but they step into that and they embrace it. To me, fearlessness is about leaning into those little moments. Fearlessness is a muscle and the more that we strengthen that muscle, the more that we practice being fearless, the better we get at it, and the more we do it, the better we get at it potentially in the bigger moments.

I think the first thing you've got to do is change sort of that narrative to curiosity. The biggest blocker I see sometimes to people leaning into fear is really a fear of change, and that's normal, that's human to fear change because it's uncomfortable. But what I consistently saw with great athletes is that change equals growth, and when we lean into change the other side of that is often an opportunity to get better.
