In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2019, Glennon Doyle—best-selling author, activist, speaker and founder of Together Rising—shares how we can better connect with one another.

“One of the reasons why we struggle to connect with each other, authentically, is that we don't show each other our true selves,” she says. “In order to make effective change, you have to actually be seen, and you have to actually see the real other people.”

All work is about connection. I think one of the reasons why we struggle to connect with each other, authentically, is that we don't show each other our true selves. So we all walk around like, missing each other, feeling lonely, feeling isolated, and that's because most of us at some point in our lives have been taught by whomever that our true, real selves are too much or not enough. And so we have learned to lock that self away and create a representative. And we just kinda send the representative out into the world to meet people and then that's why we're lonely. Because in order to be, to be loved, in order to make effective change, you have to actually be seen, and you have to actually see the real other people.

Words are everything because words are the way that I, you know we have these bodies, but words are the way that I can show my insides to other people. That's how I can connect with my true self with other people's true selves. The first time that I started typing words and saw them on my screen, I felt more like I was looking into a mirror than I ever do actually looking into a mirror. It's like, finally being free. And I think that when we are truthful, when we try to think of the truest words we can in any situation, not the right words, but the truest ones and offer them vulnerably to another human being, that's when the magic happens, because that's when another real person can say, "Oh my God, me too, I'm actually seeing inside somebody's fake representative."

And whether, no matter where that is, whether that's in writing, whether that's in an office, everything, all success has to do with two people believing in each other, and trusting each other. Effective communication, honest communication, gentle communication, that's where all progress begins.
