In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2019, Kate Delaney, Emmy award-winning journalist and host of “The Kate Delaney Show,” discusses how to find your way through uncharted territory.

“It's really important that you put yourself in the position mentally before you step into a space that's a little bit uncomfortable or awkward, or a place where you haven't been, so that you frame it correctly once you get there,” she says. “That way you pull that courage up in you.”

It's really important that you put yourself in the position mentally before you step into a space that's a little bit uncomfortable or awkward, or a place where you haven't been, so that you frame it correctly once you get there. That way you pull that courage up in you. And so you want to set yourself up right mentally. That's the No. 1 thing really that you have to do. And then of course once you get there, smile, take a breath, relax. We're all human beings and I think sometimes we forget that.

If it comes to the point where you've been somewhere and you feel as though it's so uncomfortable that you just absolutely don't fit in, that there's something that's not clicking, whatever it might be, I think the thing to do is not to be afraid to reach out to somebody. Hopefully, you have a mentor you can go to, a more senior person who perhaps has been in those situations, and trust me, they're out there, and that mentor would be key in giving you best practices. What do they know because they're in that lane. Let's say, it's financial, let's say, it's legal, go to the experts, go to the people who can help you, because they've probably been there as well, and there's something in that wisdom. I think too often we're afraid to ask questions and we're afraid to say, “Something seems off. How can I do this bigger?”
