The first step for a leader in building an inclusive team is to establish credibility and humility. Egos are the biggest barriers for leaders. When a leader is able to be humble, they listen better. They're able to capture points of view from a group of people. They understand that ideas and opportunities could very well come from other sources. You see for a leader, the most important role is to make sure that they are creating value through others. That's where leaders contribute to an organization, it's through other people. And so when a leader is able to be humble, they are more open-minded and more open-hearted as well.

Trust is the most important currency for relationships with people. Trust is oftentimes equated with confidence. If you have high trust with someone, you could say the wrong thing and people still understand where you're coming from. But if there's a lack of trust in any relationship within a team, and you say something that is accurate, you interpret the data in the correct and precise way, but with the lack of trust, you will always be misunderstood and so trust is a critical currency that leaders have to develop between them and the people that they rally.

The leader must care about the impact of how they communicate. Whether it's through a virtual communication channel, face-to-face, in written form, email, communication is critical. The leader has to check for understanding. The leader has to watch their tone of voice, their body language, the matching of intent and effect that will impact of the communication is absolutely critical for the leader.
