In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2019, Luvvie Ajayi—award-winning author, speaker and digital strategist—explains why leaders should create their own checklist to gauge whether or not feedback is worth sharing.

“If you are somebody who wants to say something that feels difficult, come up with your own checklist of things that you know, that this is my barometer, this is my criteria,” she says. “And if I am able to objectively say yes to [this checklist for] myself, then it is my job to say or do that thing.”

Watch the video to learn more about creating an internal checklist for offering critical feedback.

If you have something to say, and you want to figure out how and when to say it, I think you should kind of do a checklist with yourself. So what I do whenever I want to say, or do something difficult, is I asked myself three questions. And I use this as a way to make sure I'm not being impulsive. That I'm also being like leading in the best way possible.

So my three questions are: Do I mean it? And it's basically, I'm not saying that just because I'm being contrary. And I'm not saying that just to disagree with somebody. I'm saying it because I'm actually, it’s something that is in my spirit to say, so if the answer is yes to all three, I say whatever that is, and for me, it's a good way to also make sure that I'm holding myself accountable, to elevate in the spaces that I'm in.

So if you are somebody who wants to say something that feels difficult, come up with your own checklist of things that you know, that this is my barometer, this is my criteria. And if I am able to objectively say yes to these questions to myself, then it is my job to say or do that thing.

It might feel trite, but if you're compelled to do or say it, then you should probably do it. So that's an internal work because it's not external feedback that's going to force you to say it. It's going to be you holding yourself, up to the point of like, I know this is going to be tough, but I have to say this thing.
