In this backstage interview from Leadercast Women 2019, Deshauna Barber, captain for the U.S. Army Reserve and Miss USA 2016, discusses how to stay true to your moral compass as a leader.

“When you're in a leadership position, your moral compass is tested,” she shares. “True leaders are always focused on what's right and what's wrong. No matter who it upsets and no matter who it pleases, a leader is always going to be focused on their moral compass and doing the positive thing.”

Being in pageantry and being in the military taught me a lot about leadership. I think it definitely taught me how much you have to reevaluate who you are and what you stand for because I do believe that when you're in a leadership position, your moral compass is tested. So you have moments where you're trying to decide do you wanna look good for your peers, or do you want to be compassionate and impactful to your soldiers or the people that you're leading?

So you're having to make true decisions based on what you believe is right or wrong, and you have to be able to stand on that. And I think that true leaders are always focused on what's right and what's wrong. No matter who it upsets and no matter who it pleases, a leader is always going to be focused on their moral compass and doing what's the positive thing and what's right and what's wrong for the people that they're leading.

I definitely think that the military and pageantry really directed my moral compass and showed me, OK, Deshauna, who do you want to be? What do you want to represent? And I realized I just wanna represent what's right, what's compassionate and dedicate all my decisions to that.
