It’s no longer enough just to have a vision of where you want to be in the future. In order to actually get there in the most efficient way possible, you must incorporate strategy into the mix. Often businesses know what they want to do, but aren’t clear on why they want to do it. Without first knowing why you’re going in the direction you’re headed, then it will be easy to deviate from your plan. A strategic vision should answer the question of why you’re doing what you’re doing and how you’re going to do it.
As leaders, we are programmed to want to do something that makes a difference. When we are involved with a project that has meaning and purpose, we are inspired. Inspired to work harder, inspired to give that extra 10% or to go the extra mile – whatever it takes to succeed. Your company or organization’s strategic vision should light that fire in your team. It should be clear why you’re doing what you’re doing. The “why” is what motivates people.
Leadership expert, Henry Cloud, talks about not just the importance of a solid strategic vision, but whether or not your team buys into the vision. If you’re the only on board for the vision in place, then that does no good. Your team has to be on board also. He asks, “Are you willing to give your life for the vision? Your team can tell.” If your team doesn’t sense that you’re 100% committed to the goal, then you can bet they won’t commit either.
Overall, strategic vision is what moves us toward our preferred future with little deviation.
