Motivation—your general desire or willingness to do something—often comes in waves. Consider the influx of resolutions that happens at the start of every year. New Year’s is a time when people reflect on the year gone by and think of how they want to be better in the future. They set goals and start their year highly motivated, but not everyone stays on course to achieve what they set out to do.

The same happens in organizations and leaders play a key role in keeping motivation high. Great leaders do this, first and foremost, by defining a clear and concise purpose. Motivated employees know the why behind what they do. They feel rooted in the purpose of their organization and see how their work contributes to it. Leaders also keep people motivated by setting clear goals, leading by example, offering praise and rewards, and empowering those around them.
