Mentoring and Coaching

Mentoring and coaching are similar in nature. Mentoring is the long-term sharing of wisdom and knowledge to help another person grow. It is based on mutual trust and respect, with a focus on creating an informal association between the mentor and mentee. Coaching, on the other hand, is for a short period of time. Mentorship resembles a friendship and coaching follows a more structured and formal approach.

No matter which role you serve as a mentor or coach, to be successful you must facilitate the exploration of needs, motivations, desires, skills, and thought processes to assist the individual in making real, lasting change. You should support the individual by setting appropriate goals and methods of assessing progress. Observe, listen and ask questions to understand the person’s situation, and creatively apply tools and techniques which may include one-to-one training, facilitating, counseling and networking.
