Meet Leadercast Women’s Mama Jan Smith
Life often requires a journey to find your purpose. Vocal coach and producer Mama Jan Smith discovered hers when she put her own music path aside to help others shine.
Before she was nicknamed “Mama” by Usher, Jan grew up in the world of Southern gospel music; her father was a worship leader and her mother sang in the choir. But it was her heart for rock and roll that led her to pursue a music career at 15 years old.
Jan had regional success as a performer, but didn’t become a household name until she began coaching others.
Now, after more than 30 years in the industry, Mama Jan works with more top Billboard artists than any other vocal coach in the biz. Her studio, Jan Smith Studios, has helped more than 4,000 vocalists, musicians and producers find their voice, including Usher, Rob Thomas, Justin Bieber, The Band Perry and Drake.
Mama Jan is proof that you never know how your passions will help you find your purpose.
“If you fall, you get up and you move on… Being responsible for it and taking responsibility matters an awful lot so you're not leaving a trail of debris.” — Mama Jan Smith
